I use MiniMax for coding agents and multimodal experiments on a Mac desk in Jakarta. The console now shows two different ways to pay, and mixing them up is the fastest way to burn a wallet or hit a quiet quota wall. This is a decision guide: when Token Plan (the subscription that replaced the old Coding Plan) makes sense, when pay-as-you-go API is the better tool, and what my first referral voucher actually was.

Two bills, two keys

MiniMax keeps subscription usage and wallet usage on separate credentials:

• Token Plan uses a Subscription Key (often shown with an sk-cp- style prefix). Included quota shows as a usage bar. Docs describe 5-hour rolling and weekly windows. Unused subscription quota does not carry over.
• Pay-as-you-go API uses a standard Open Platform API Key and deducts measured usage from the team wallet balance.

Those keys are not interchangeable. Putting a Subscription Key into a production service that you meant to bill from the wallet, or the reverse, is a configuration bug, not a discount.

Public Token Plan tiers (Plus / Max / Ultra) are sold as monthly seats with shared 5-hour and weekly windows. Exact dollar prices move; treat the console checkout as the source of truth, not a blog table from last week.

One workflow I would actually run

1. Prototype agent loops and multimodal experiments on Token Plan with the Subscription Key.
2. When a path becomes a scheduled job, a webhook, or anything that must not stop for a quota window, create a separate API Key and point that path at pay-as-you-go.
3. Never share either key in a screenshot, gist, or chat log. Rotate if it leaks.

That split matches how I already keep desk tools separate from production: the USB-C hub on the desk is not the server rack. Same idea for MiniMax keys.

What my first referral voucher actually was

On 28 August 2026 UTC my MiniMax Open Platform account recorded a Coding Plan Referral Voucher Reward of $4.95. That is exactly 10% of a referred payment of $49.50. Status was In Effect. Validity window shown: 28 August 2026 through 26 November 2026. Usage note in-account: valid for platform API calls.

Important honesty:

• This was a voucher, not withdrawable cash. Public MiniMax referral terms describe a non-withdrawable, non-transferable voucher usable against eligible Open Platform API invocation fees.
• I am not claiming every plan, renewal, region, or credit pack is referral-eligible. Checkout and current in-account terms win over any blog summary.
• Public promotion pages have shown event end dates that may disagree with a live voucher. I trust the console record for my own $4.95 / 2026-11-26 expiry, and I will not say the program is open forever.

Who should skip Token Plan

Skip the subscription if you only need a single production endpoint with predictable per-token billing, if your traffic must ignore 5-hour/weekly windows, or if your team already standardizes on wallet keys and finance wants invoice-style usage. Skip pay-as-you-go as your only path if you want a capped personal agent budget and hate surprise wallet burn overnight.
